Spring is Over
Spring is clearly over, and so is the honeymoon. It's hovering around 110° and the winds are really intense right now, which cause painful dust storms. I'm really wondering what in God's name would make anyone ever want to live here. If I recall correctly there are 9 major tribes in Afghanistan, so that means throughout history at least 9 groups of people independently decided that the oppressive heat, dangerous winds, propensity to flood during wet months and the extremely short growing season were too good to pass up. And what about the Soviets? They had the biggest country in the world, but it just wasn't complete without Afghanistan...? I can see why it was important to the British. Afghanistan served as an important defense perimeter for their big cash cow (or cash Brahma bull if you will) India. On it's own merits however, it is lacking. Afghanistan makes 29 Palms look verdant. Anyway, I'm certainly glad I only have 4 more months.
